Luigi Bertelli was born in Bologna and studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts but not as a regular student. His preference for landscapes is proved, in some works of 1857 which revealed his knowledge of contemporary painters of this genre from Bologna. In the following years these influences were mixed with those of "Macchiaioli" and the French school of Corot, Daubigny and Duprè. In 1870 he won a prize at the Art Exhibition of Parma. In the following years he took part at important Italian exhibitions (Turin 1880, Milan 1881, Rome 1883) and during the last twenty years of his life he had produced his best paintings but he was not completely appreciated from the critics. Today, he is one of the most beloved local authors and his works are exhibited in many one-man shows.
